Tranquebar er udnævnt til kulturarvsby af myndighederne i delstaten Tamil Nadu, bl.a. fordi byen til forskel fra andre tidligere europæiske handelsstationer på den indiske Coromandelkyst har bevaret sit arkitektoniske særpræg fra kolonitiden. I de seneste år har bygningerne givet anledning til en mængde rapporter, der kortlægger deres tilstand og skitserer planer for bevaring og udvikling, blandt andet med henblik på en øget turisme. Men at etablere Tranquebar som kulturarvsby er langtfra blot et spørgsmål om at bevare de fysiske strukturer i byrummet. Aktuelt indgår der fra flere danske og indiske aktørers side bevidst erklærede bestræbelser på at skabe en øget lokal bevidsthed om vigtigheden og betydningen af at bevare kulturarv, som den kommer til udtryk i historiske bygninger. At genoplive et stykke indo-dansk historie
er imidlertid ikke ukompliceret, for hvis historie er det egentlig man forsøger at genoplive - og hvilken historie?
Med udgangspunkt i en række interviews og udviklingsrapporter undersøger artiklen, hvilken betydning det har, at de aktuelle bevarings-, forsknings- og formidlingsinteresser indskriver sig i koloniale og postkoloniale relationer, og finder hos de involverede parter bl.a. en bevidsthed om at historisk interesse for Tranquebar fra dansk side ikke nødvendigvis er et uskyldigt fænomen. Samtidig er selve udformningen og forandringen af det byrum, som Tranquebars historiske bygninger indgår i, genstand for mange forskellige interesser, fra social udvikling til vidt forskellige syn på æstetik. Skal man forstå den aktuelle udvikling omkring Tranquebars kulturarv, må man ikke blot udforske historiske
narrativer omkring byen ud fra en traditionel historisk optik, der fokuserer på en refleksiv og detaljeret kronologisk historiebevidsthed. Man må undersøge hvordan befolkning og besøgende i Tranquebar i praksis bruger byrummet og bygningerne, og hvordan denne færden og kontakten mellem folk, der engagerer sig i omgivelserne med forskellige formål, får betydning.

English abstract:
Tranquebar has been declared a heritage town by the authorities in Tamil Nadu, for which one reason is that the town, as opposed to a number of other former European trading stations on the Coromandel Coast, has preserved its distinct architectural traits from the colonial period. In recent years the buildings have given occasion for a number of reports that map their structural condition and outline plans for preservation and development, also for the purpose of increasing their tourism potential. But establishing Tranquebar as a heritage town is far from being simply a question of preserving the physical structures of the townscape. Currently a number of Danish as well as Indian agents consciously aim to create an increased local awareness of the importance and significance of preserving heritage, as it is expressed in historic buildings. However, reviving this piece of Indo-Danish history is not uncomplicated; for whose history is it that is sought to be revived - and which history? Based on a series of interviews and development reports, this article explores which significance it has that the current interests in preservation, research and dissemination are inscribed in colonial and postcolonial relations. It is found that the involved agents are aware that a historic interest in Tranquebar from Danish side is not necessarily an innocent phenomenon. The very shape and changes of the townscape in which the historic buildings of Tranquebar are a part, are subject to many interests, ranging from social development to widely differing aesthetic ideals. In order to understand the current development it is not sufficient to explore historical narratives of the town from a traditional historical perspective, focusing on a reflexive and detailed chronological consciousness of history. It must be investigated how the population and visitors in Tranquebar use the townscape and buildings in actual practice, and how these movements and the contact between people who engage in the surroundings with
differing purposes gain meaning.
